Reia in Kimono

Reia in Kimono

2007-11-11

Yesterday we took Reia to a photo studio for a Japanese tradition. She turned seven this year, which is an important year for girls (along with the years they turn three and five). This year we (well, my in-laws) decided to go all out. We went to a photo studio that specializes in Shichi-go-san ("Seven Five Three") photos. They rented us the kimono, fixed up Reia's hair, applied make up, dressed her up, and shot her. They were also kind enough to let me take a few photos in the studio (but without the lighting kit they used). Then they relieved my mother-in-law of a few hundred dollars, and we went out for pasta.

The studio had FIFTY kids scheduled to come in today (Sunday). Later in the car I realized they would be making almost twenty thousand dollars in one day. Actually, they made more than that, because the sitting fee only includes two prints, and I'm sure most families order more.

  • Nice shot. Beautiful smile.

Why is it an important year for girls? What does that imply? (Sorry, I don't know much about the Japanese culture...)
